Creative Revision techniques can change the effects of unpleasant past experiences. What we change is our attitudes, concepts and convictions about these past events. We also change our self-talk as a result of Creative Revision, but the Creative Revision Technique does not use self-talk to make changes happen.

The Creative Revision Technique is so powerful because subsequent success and pleasant experiences do not seem to erase the emotional hurts that we experienced. This is because the full emotional experience of the incident or situation is stored in our memory system.

The Creative Revision process requires a vivid, imaginative reliving of the unpleasant life situation that generated the unpleasant memory while complete relaxation is maintained.

Even the slightest twinge of emotion will leave a portion of the original reaction intact and require later work with the method to completely erase the unwanted conditioning.

It is always a good idea to learn and practice this technique on slightly disturbing memories at first, until you become skilled in your practice.

Good choices for using the technique in the beginning are reactions that block creative expression.

Creative Revision is not a “scar removing” process, but emotional scars gradually dissolve as the energies and creative efforts are spent in self-actualization.

With Creative Revision, you are not trying to change the content of the memory in any way. What you are changing is your emotional reaction and your self-talk about the incident.

Creative Revision Instructions

Use the Creative Revision Technique to overcome guilt, resentment and feelings of failure by:

  • Become calm and quiet
  • Recall the major cause of pain or unpleasantness for a particular situation
  • Relive the situation. Imagine how you wish that the situation had unfolded
  • Make the reliving of the situation as vivid and vibrant as possible
  • Focus the reliving of the situation on strong feeling
  • Understand that we only change our reaction to the situation or event, we do not change the actual situation
  • We know if the Creative Revision Technique has been successful if we can remember the situation or event without any current emotional reaction
