The Harvard Professor's Meditation Technique is one of the Easiest Methods to use to Meditate

One of the Easiest Ways to Meditate

This is the type of meditation practice recommended by Dr. Herbert Benson of the Harvard Medical School.

This technique is safe, but people with serious physical problems should not practice this technique without consulting their physician.

Instructions:

It may help you to increase your motivation if you tell your friends that you are going to meditate without taking an expensive course.

These instructions are all you need.

  1. Select a quiet environment where you will not be disturbed.
  2. Select two times during the day when you can afford 10-20 minutes. These' times should not be less than two hours after a meal. For some people, a good time is before breakfast and before dinner. A particularly good time is when you are under stress.
  3. Find a comfortable chair. Sit in any position in which you feel at ease. But. do not lie down, you may fall asleep. Loosen any tight clothing. Take off your shoes.
  4. Close your eyes.
  5. Begin by relaxing your feet, legs, trunk, body, arms, neck and head.
  6. Breathe through your nose and become aware of your breathing.
  7. Say a simple one or two syllable word to yourself as you breathe out. Almost any word will do. Words some people like are: humgum, numnum, eeeiii, shareii, one. If you do not like one of these words, make up one of your own. A word without meaning seems best.
  8. Breathe easily and naturally. If all sorts of questions, ideas, worries come into your head as you meditate, ignore them. Keep repeating your word. If your eyes are closed, they will go away. No harm is done if they stay with you a bit.
  9. You may loose your sense of time while meditating. Check the time occasionally by opening your eyes to look at your watch or clock. Don't set the alarm, the sound will jar you.
  10. Don't jump up and walk around after you finish meditating. First, sit quietly for a minute or so with your eyes closed, then with your eyes open.
